Artist statement:
I work predominantly within the printmaking medium. I favor printmaking over other mediums because of the wide array of subcategories offered within it that each require a specific kind of technical execution. I am intrigued by the various printmaking processes that transform the original work into
something different and often more interesting. It is this combination of meticulous execution that printmaking often requires combined with an element of chance that draws me towards this medium. The expansive technical processes within the printmaking realm each uniquely add another dimension onto the original work. The transformation from a single image into multiple copies creates a new concept surrounding the finished work.
I have always been fascinated by the delicate and intricate patterns found within the species of the natural world. Many of the organic forms we find in nature have small inextricable and seemingly mathematical patterns. My work consists on the concentration of these beautiful patterns found on or within these different organisms. I am enchanted by the Darwinian nature of these creatures as well as the connotations associated with them in modern life. Darwin’s genius was in finding great general truths among the details of humble, often obscure creatures. My sources of inspiration all stem from a similar fascination with the natural world and the complex creatures within it as Charles Darwin’s. My work often includes plantlife, sealife, insects, crustaceans, etc. I am drawn to the unknown and undiscovered aspects of the origin of these creatures, especially pertaining to how the organisms living in the deep sea are able to survive. In my artwork I frequently draw the creatures that people are often scared of or horrified by because I want to show my own vision of the beauty that I find within them. I choose to recreate these various ominous looking organisms, such as cockroaches and beetles to show a deeper look into the aesthetically stunning detailed patterns found on these creatures into a 2dimensional nonthreatening form. My goal is to transform these intimidating looking creatures into works of art and make the world see the beauty that I find within each unique organism. I work in a very meticulous compulsive manner that I find is similar to the analytical makeup of the organisms found in the natural world. My aim in my work is to visually convey my own relationship with the natural world, through my own scrupulous application of multi media forms and printmaking techniques.
